Beaulieu and Amberley 2022
Short break on the South coast
The famous family visitor attraction of Beaulieu is in the New Forest, its history being traceable back to the early 13th century when the Abbey was established. Since 1952, when Palace House and Garden became one of the first ‘stately homes’ to admit visitors, it has developed as the National Motor Museum following the original modest display of five veteran cars on the entrance hall. Then the following day we go to the Amberley Museum. Here you can discover Sussex’s working past in the heart of the South Downs.

We drive to the New Forest by late morning for a long stay at Beaulieu. Edward, Lord Montagu, who passed away in 2015, believed that Britain’s great houses and gardens should be enjoyed by all and has made this possible for well over 60 years. The National Motor Museum is a charity with a world famous collection of vehicles and associated motoring archives. The Palace House became a family home in 1867: it was back in 1204 when King John gave land to Cistercian monks for an Abbey. From here to Bournemouth for dinner, bed & breakfast.

Amberley, in the South Downs National Park, is dedicated to preserving the industrial history of the South. Our visit includes a talk and transport round the site, which, at 36 acres, is big. See age-old skills being kept alive, try your hand at printing, learn about how science and technology have changed the way we live. Later in the day we return to Essex.
