New for 2018 is this exploration of a beautiful yet relatively unknown area of central Wales. River valleys like the Usk and

the Wye, reservoirs like the Elan Valley, lakes such as Llangorse, are dominated by mountain peaks which are the highest in

southern Britain. Brecon, where we stay, is the former county town of Brecknock, now part of Powys; attractions include a

Cathedral, a Regimental Museum and terrific views. Excursions also go west as far as Cardigan Bay to the little resort of

Aberaeron with its attractive Georgian buildings and to the hugely popular ‘book town’ of Hay-on-Wye.

BRECON CASTLE HOTEL

www.breconcastle.co.uk. Formerly an 11th

Century Norman Castle, it became a hotel in

1809. It retains the warmth and character of a

coaching inn mixed with the formality of a late

Georgian hotel. The mountains dominate the

town of Brecon and provide a picturesque

backdrop to ballroom, gardens, restaurant and

bar. All rooms are individually decorated and offer

LCD TVs and tea & coffee making facilities. Most

rooms are on the first floor (no lift): a limited

number are on the ground floor.
